アメリカ人も騙される!? アメリカなまりを使いこなす外国の俳優たち

アメリカ人の俳優がイギリスのアクセントを使いこなし、見事な演技を披露すると、役者としての評価が高くなることは、『ブリジット・ジョーンズの日記』でのレニー・ゼルウィガーや、『恋におちたシェイクスピア』のグウィネス・パルトロウなどが証明している。しかし、当たり前の話だが、色んな国の俳優がアメリカン・アクセントを流暢に話す、という逆の場合もある。そして、中にはアメリカ人でさえ、アクセントが完ぺきにアメリカ風なために、アメリカ人だと思い込む例もあるようだ。

FOXの人気ドラマ『Dr. HOUSE』の主演俳優ヒュー・ローリーは、役を演じているときはアメリカ人よりもアメリカ人のような話し方をする。だが彼は英国出身であり、テレビのトーク番組などでは、彼の英国アクセントを聞くことができる。

人気ドラマ『ゴシップガール』でチャック・バス役を演じるエド・ウェストウィック。ニューヨーク・マンハッタンの億万長者のイメージが強いため、彼が英国出身であることは、にわかには信じ難い。チャックを演じるときの甘い声でのささやきは、何万ものアメリカ人をトリコにしているのだから。

英国が舞台になっている『ハリー・ポッター』シリーズのエマ・ワトソンが、アメリカ人ではないことは有名だが、彼女がインタビューに答えるとき、エマはアメリカン・アクセントを使うようにしている。理由もさだかではなく、少しわざとらしいアメリカン・アクセントと思われているエマだが、2012年に公開が予定されているアメリカが舞台の映画『The Perks of Being a Wallflower』では、そのアメリカン・アクセントをたっぷり聞くことができるだろう。

スパイダーマンのコスチュームは赤と青、つまり星条旗の色である。さて、それでは新スパイダーマンに抜擢されたアンドリュー・ガーフィールドは何人なのか。実はアンドリューも英国人なのだ(アメリカ生まれの英国育ち)。果たして英国人にスパイダーマンが務まるのか、心配は御無用。『ソーシャル・ネットワーク』でのアンドリューは、アメリカ人にしか見えなかった。

アメリカ人が英国アクセントを使いこなして高い評価を得るように、英国人やアメリカ以外の国籍の役者がアメリカのアクセントを完ぺきに話すことも、キャリアアップにつながるような評価を得る。そんな彼らの母国語のアクセントを聞けるチャンスは、アカデミー賞やゴールデン・グローブ賞の受賞スピーチだったりする。例えば、アメリカを代表するヒーローであるスパイダーマンを演じたアンドリュー・ガーフィールドが、受賞スピーチでは、思い切り英国アクセントで話す可能性があるということ。そんな愉快な機会に出会える日もそう遠くはないだろう。
