まだあまり有名ではない俳優を起用したインディー映画は、完成から公開までに時間がかかることが多く、ハリウッドの映画事情の難しさを物語っている。しかし、10月14日の全米公開が発表された『Fireflies In The Garden』の場合は、少し事情が異なる。ハリウッドきっての豪華スターが出演しているのに、全米公開に3年かかっているのだ。
2008年にベルリン国際映画祭でプレミア上映された『Fireflies In The Garden』は、ジュリア・ロバーツとライアン・レイノルズ、そしてウィレム・デフォーという人気俳優たちが出演している。プレミア上映の後にアメリカ以外の多くの国で公開されたこの作品だが、全米での配給の予算が立たず、全米公開までに3年の月日が流れていったのだ。
『Fireflies In The Garden』は、ジュリア・ロバーツがライアン・レイノルズの母親を、そしてライアンやジュリアに暴力をふるう夫をウィレム・デフォーが演じている。壊れた家庭についての映画で、ライアンの少年時代から、家族の集まりのために車に乗ったジュリアが交通事故で死んでしまうまでの17年間を描き、残された家族の痛みと希望が最後に浮かび上がるようだ。

公開までに時間がかかってしまったものの、監督のデニス・リーとジュリアの関係は良好なようで、彼女が初プロデュース作品として選んだ『Jesus Henry Christ』の監督にデニスを抜てき。さらに同作のカメラマンはジュリアの夫ダニー・モダーで、家族ぐるみの作品となったようだ。
『Fireflies In The Garden』と『Jesus Henry Christ』。どちらが先に日本で公開されるかは未定ですが、ジュリアがほれ込んだ才能を見てみたいと思いませんか？
