元祖エクストリームスポーツ!? パキスタン山奥の100人でやるスノーホッケー!

パキスタンの国技はホッケー。それもそのはず、何百年も前から、雪の中でスノーホッケーをしていたのですから!富士山より高い山が複数ある、チトラルからの珍しい映像です。

ここはパキスタンの北部、チトラル地方にあるカラシュ谷。高い山に囲まれ、1年のうち何ヶ月も、雪で道が閉ざされて他の地域との交通が遮断されます。

氷点下の気温は当たり前のこの地方で、毎年楽しみにされているのが、真冬の「voz ghal」スノーホッケーフェスティバル。3日間、地域の村同士が競い合います。そのエクストリームぶりはどれほどかというと... 。

プレイヤー数に制限がないため、一試合に参加する人数は100人近くになることも!年齢制限もないので、参加者は子供から大人までさまざま。プレイするのは深い雪の中で、エリアは2マイル(3.2キロ)にも及びます。試合時間は5時間近くかかることもあり、雪が降っていようが雨が降っていようが中止ということはありません。

勝ったチームのキャプテンは、3日間「mehtar」(王子)としてあがめられ、その命令は期間中、どんなことでも従わなければいけないそうです。

今年のフェスティバルのディレクターだったLaeq Rehmatさんは、「世界中どこを探しても、ここのスノーホッケーより感情が入るスポーツはないでしょう。他のスポーツだったら、雨が降ったらやめてしまう。でもこれは、どんな天気でも、雪がどさどさ降っていようが続くんです」と語りました。

「この伝統は、何百年も続いているもの。誰も邪魔はできない」と言うのは、長老のKhalilur Rehimanさん。「『mehtar』(王子)がどんな罰を命じようが、みんな快く応じる」とか。

いったい「罰」ってどんなものなんでしょうか!?ビデオの最後にあるように、あまり意地悪でない王子様だといいですね。
