リチャード&レイ・イームズの短編作品で外宇宙と内宇宙を旅しよう

アメリカのモダニズムを象徴するデザイナー、リチャード&レイ・イームズ夫妻。彼らによる1977年の作品「Powers of 10」は、1957年Kees Boeke著『Cosmic View』を元にした短編映像。想像力と効率、スタイルと機能、アートと科学など、常に矛盾する双方の接合点を探求してきた夫妻らしい作品である。



最初はのどかなピクニックのシーンから始まり、10分の1ずつズームアウトしていき、いつの間にか地球を見下ろし、果てには銀河系を超えて遥か宇宙の果てへ飛び出てしまい、地球がもはや見えなくなる。そこから今度は10倍ずつズームイン、あっという間に地球のあのピクニックの場面へと戻ると、そのままさらに視点が縮小してゆき、昼寝する男性の皮膚の表面、白血球、そしてDNAの螺旋、さらには原子格の内部まで視点は突き進んでゆく。

「原子核の中は未だ解き明かしきれない」というナレーションと共に視点の縮小でストップ。宇宙の果ての様子が誰にも解らないのと同様に、物質の最小の原子がどうなっているのか、まだ誰も見たことがないのである。

しかし、こうして観ると両者はそこまで違わないように見えるから不思議だ。内宇宙と外宇宙を巡る不思議な円環が見事に表現された、興味深い作品である。また、「宇宙の果てまで行くと、周囲はほとんど何もないのですが、宇宙はこのような場所で成り立っているのです。いかに私たちの近隣が賑やかで豊かであることか、改めてわかるというものではありませんか」と言うナレーションも秀逸だ。

現在、12月7日より東京・新宿のリビング・デザインセンターOZONEで展覧会『essential EAMES』が開催されている。是非チェックしてほしい。
