宇宙からも見える家?! 17年かけてエスカレートした、究極のド派手クリスマスライティング

毎年クリスマスの時期に家をデコレーションしたり、ライトアップするのはアメリカの家庭の楽しい行事のひとつですが、今回のビデオに登場する家では、そのプロセスになんと7週間(!)かけるそうです。



ケヴィン・リンチ(Kevin Lynch)さんが、ニューヨークのクイーンズ地区にある今の家に引っ越したのは17年前。消防士だったリンチさんの初めてのマイホームでした。

向かいの家がきれいにライトで飾られたのを見て、自分も試しにやってみたと言うリンチさん。すると 、向かいにはさらに多くのライトが。次の年、それにペースを合わせてまたライトを増やしたリンチさんとお向かいの隣人はライティング合戦に突入、「3年後には向こうが負けた」とか。

子供が生まれ、喜ばせようと年を重ねるにつれ事態はエスカレート。もはや、リンチさんに挑戦しようとする人はいないでしょう。

「全部自分でやるんだ、コードもきれいに隠して、見えないように地面に埋めてね...7週間かかるよ」と言うリンチさんの家は、今はニューヨークで一番明るいかも知れません。見に来る人は絶えず、訪れた航空会社のフライトアテンダントには、「飛行機から見えた」と言われたそうです。「宇宙からも見えるらしいよ。宇宙飛行士からそう葉書をもらったよ」とのことですが...。

「目下のライバルは、9歳のせがれだね」と語るリンチさんの息子さんは、ビデオの後半に出て来る家の中のライティングをさして「全部自分でやったんだよ」と得意げです。「お父さんと同じように(自分ひとりで)。」

彼が大きくなって自分の家を持つようになった時、お父さんの近所だったら大変なことになりそうです。
