口からスラスラ英語がこぼれる! すぐに役立つ「超実戦型」英会話マニュアルがスゴい

「英語を使って外国人とスラスラと会話を楽しみたい!」という人にとって、まるで夢のようなうたい文句ですが、率直に言って、今までまったく英語を勉強したことの無い人にこの本はオススメできません。新しい単語を覚えたり、知らなかった英文法を身につけたりするためには、この本よりも適した本はたくさんあるでしょう。


ただし、中学・高校と一生懸命英語を勉強してきたけどなぜか英語で会話をすることが出来ない人、あるいは「読み書き」はある程度できるけれど、いざ外国人を前にすると言葉に詰まってしまうという人にとって、この本はとても実用的なアドバイスがたっぷり詰まっています。

著者である大橋健太さんの日本国内での最終学歴は、小学校卒業まで。中学校時代に非行に走り、このままではダメになると悲観した両親によって、大橋さんは英語がまったく話せないまま単身アメリカに留学させられてしまったそうです。

そんな大橋さんが、言葉のまったく通じない外国で、まさに「体で覚えた」、超実戦的な英会話スキルの極意を伝えているのが、この本の特徴となっています。日本人が学校の授業を通じて蓄えてきた「英語力」を、会話中にたった1秒間意識するだけでスラスラと紡ぎ出すための「メソッド」を、図解や例文を使って分かりやすく説明しています。この本の中で、ややこしい英文法について解説するのは約20ページだけ。残りの紙面では、英語で会話をスラスラ続けるための実用的な「武器」の数々を紹介しています。

大橋さんが教える、英語でスラスラ会話するための「武器」は「会話が細切れにならないように、一言しゃべったらすぐに『接続詞』を使ってセンテンスを積み重ねる」「相手の言葉に対する『質問』をあらかじめ定型化して覚えておく」「相手の話す内容を受けた会話の展開を、『図式化』して予測する」など、実際の会話の場面ですぐに役立つもの実用的なものばかり。正しい英語を探してアタフタする前に、とにかく次々と会話を繋いでいくための手段を、例文を交えながら分かりやすく説明しています。

また、「いつ、どこで、誰が、何をした」という「情報」と同じくらい、「感情」を重視しているのもこの本の特徴。たとえば、「What did you do yesterday?(昨日は何をしましたか?)」という質問に対して、相手が「I went to Tokyo Disneyland(ディズニーランドに行きました)」と答えたとき、単純に「How was it?(どうでしたか?)」と聞くのではなく、まず「Oh! That's great!(それは良いですね!)」と感情を込めたコメントを伝えることで、上っ面だけではない、心のこもった深い英会話を推奨しています。

英語がまったく話せない状態でアメリカに放り込まれた作者が、ただただ「会話」するためだけに編み出したノウハウは、何年も学校で英語を勉強したのに会話が出来ない日本人にとって、今すぐ役立つ実戦的なものばかり! 外国人を前にするとどうしても言葉に詰まってしまう、という人にオススメの一冊です。
