125総製作費10億円！ 世界初の映像を記録『BBCグレート・バリア・リーフ』撮影裏話

驚異の映像美と圧倒的な迫力で贈るネイチャー・ドキュメンタリーの最高峰BBC EARTHから、新たに「グレート・シリーズ」が登場。製作期間18ヶ月、総製作費10億円以上をかけた大作ドキュメンタリーシリーズが連続リリースされている。今回はその中から『グレート・バリア・リーフ』のプロデューサー、ジェームズ・ブリッケル氏に、撮影の裏話、自然に対する思い、そして今を生きる子供たちへの願いなど、熱い話を伺ってきた。
自然の生物を撮るというだけで大がかりそうだが、水中ということでさらに難易度はぐんと上がるとジェームズさんは語る。
「まずロケーションをくまなく調査することが必要だ。気象条件、これは地上よりもさらに厳しいよ。日照時間や海流、水温、どのくらい視界があるかも把握していなければならない。これらがひとつでもズレると、撮れなくなってしまうんだよ」と水中撮影の準備段階から途方もなく大変そう...。
「そして撮影チーム。自然を撮影するカメラマンはそれだけでエキスパートだけど、特に水中のカメラマンとなると世界的にも数百人しかいないんじゃないかな。究極の専門職だよね。あとカメラ。僕たちの番組では、より深く、より長く水中に滞在することを求められる。しかもカメラが一番嫌うのが水と塩なのに、その中にいれなきゃならないんだから大変だよ（笑）。ちなみにカメラは1,000ポンド（15万円）、レンズなんか5万ポンド（754万円）もするんだよ！」

グレート・バリア・リーフはオーストラリアの東部に広がり、世界の自然七不思議のひとつに数えられ、1981年には世界遺産に登録された世界最大のサンゴ礁地帯。無数に生息するサンゴやその他の海洋動物、そして魚たちが織り成す生態系は、ここでしか成立しないものが多い。サンゴ礁は、波、潮の流れ、太陽と月のリズム、地球の気候変動によって常に変化し、個性的なサンゴ礁の中には、まさに"海の宝石"のごとく夜になると蛍光色に輝く種もあるという。とにかく神秘的な場所なのだ。
「サンゴ礁といっても日本、バハマ、ボルネオなどいろんな所で撮影できるけど、グレート・バリア・リーフはある意味カリスマ的な場所。僕にとって撮影場所を決めるとき、その場のムードは題材と同じくらい重要なんだけど、水中でそのムードを捉えるのはなかなか難しいんだ。でもグレート・バリア・リーフは初めからそのムードが備わっている場所なんだよ」。
目を輝かせながらそう語る彼の子供時代はいったいどんな少年だったのだろうか。
「悪夢のような子供だったよ（笑）」と笑うジェームズさん。「巨大なクモや蛇、虫、いろんな種類の魚を家にもちこんでたから、家族は逃げまわっていたね。うちは当時家政婦さんを雇っていたんだけど、彼女はクモが大の苦手だったんだ。でもある日、僕が飼ってたタランチュラが逃げ出したと思ったら、たまたまトイレに彼女が入った時そこにいて、彼女が絶叫しながらパンツを下げたままいきなりトイレから飛び出してきたんだ（笑）。申し訳なかったと今も思ってるよ（笑）」。
最後に、今の子供たちに向けてメッセージをもらった。
「外に出てたくさん遊び、楽しんでほしいね。イギリスでも子供に危険なことはさせない、あまり外で遊ばせないという家庭が増えている。1日中ゲームやスマートフォンをいじって過ごす子供たちは多いよね。僕には6歳と8歳の子供がいるんだけど、木も登らせるし、海も泳がせる。なんでも外で経験させているよ。子供はもともと自然に興味をもっているはず。グレート・バリア・リーフのような所にわざわざ行かなくても、庭に出て、虫を観察したり、草花に触れたりするだけでいいんだ。自分たちが食べた野菜や肉、魚はどこでとれるのか、日常生活からでも生態系に興味をもって学ぶことはできると思うんだよ。そして、自分がどう自然と関わりあっているかを知れば、ただ搾取するだけではいけないとか、サステナビリティの大事さを、身をもって感じる人間になるんじゃないかと思う」。
普段めったに目にすることのできない深海の生物たち、美しいサンゴ礁、2万6,000頭ものウミガメの産卵シーンなど、世界初の貴重な映像がいっぱい詰まったBBC EARTH『グレート・バリア・リーフ』。家族で見るも良し、ひとりでじっくり見るも良し、この夏ぜひお茶の間で壮大な自然を体験してみてはいかがだろうか。
