「ボートレース多摩川」名物、牛炊を食べてみた そしてまたレースに勝った!

あっぱれ、「牛炊(ぎゅうすい)」である。
牛炊は期待を大きく上回る食べものであり、想像以上の名品であった。
牛のうま味を、このどこまでも透明なスープの中へ、まろやかに、そしてぽってりと溶け込ませるテクニックは、まさしく匠の技といっていいだろう。
じっくりと、ていねいに煮込まれたに違いない牛すじ肉は、まるで磨かれた宝石のように舌の上で輝き、ホロホロととろけてゆく。
その瞬間は、「しあわせ」という意外に言葉がみつからなかった。
こんな逸品が、ボートレース場という喧噪(けんそう)の中にあることが不思議でならない。
そう、牛炊というのは「ボートレース多摩川」が誇る名物料理。
有名グルメガイド風に言えば「それを味わうために旅行する価値がある卓越した料理」といったところだ。


先日の記事で、『アイドルユニット「バニラビーンズ」とコラボした「バニラビーンズカップ」を見にいこう、そして牛炊を食べよう』と書いた。
そして予定通りに、こうしてボートレース多摩川へとやってきたわけだ。


前回は「ボートレース平和島」で、ボートレース初体験にしてその魅力にすっかりハマってしまい、興奮状態でレース場を後にした。そして今日は、二度目のボートレース観戦とバニラビーンズ、そして牛炊を楽しみに胸膨らませて、西武多摩川線にゆられた。

到着したのは開場時刻の少し前。すでに入場待ちの人だかりができていた。
開場と同時に、どどどっと、ディズニーランドの朝みたいにお客さんがなだれ込んでゆく。
どうやら、バニラビーンズも出演する「アイドルフェス in BOAT RACE TAMAGAWA」を見に来たファンのようである。
その熱気に押されつつ、筆者も入場した。

<レースの行方を決める「第一ターンマーク」がすぐそばに見える>

ぐるっと場内を巡っているうちに、ステージから歓声とともに歌声が聞こえてくる。
ちょうどアイドルグループ「nanoCUNE」のライブ中だ。
隣の水面からは調整走行中のボートのエンジン音が聞こえ、ステージ前からはファン達の歓声が聞こえる。


続いて、今日開催のレース「バニラビーンズカップ」の冠にもなっているバニラビーンズのステージ。



バニラビーンズの二人は、ライブパフォーマンスだけじゃなく、レースの予想もしているのだ。

それにしても、ボートレースとアイドルというのはなんとも不思議な組合せである。
どこをどうたぐっても、アイドルとボートは結びつかないのだが、なぜこんなイベントを思いついたのか。
主催者である青梅市事業部管理課企画係(ボートレースは地方自治体が主催しているのだ)の田村さんに話を伺ったところ、「ボートレースファンとアイドルファンはよく似ている」とのこと。

「女性ボート選手のファンは、入り待ち・出待ちや追っかけなど、アイドルファンと同じようなモチベーションで選手を応援しているんです。ということは、逆にアイドルファンをボートレース場に呼びこめば、ボートレースのファンになってくれるんじゃないか、と思ったのがきっかけです」と田村さんは語るが、そんなにうまくいくんだろうか......。
と思ったのだが、実際ライブ会場となったステージをみてみると、舟券を手にレースを観戦するアイドルファンの姿が。
田村さんらのもくろみは見事成功している。

<ボートレースのおもしろさは、一度見れば伝わる>

アイドルファンに負けていられない、筆者もレースを観戦しよう。
ボートレース多摩川は、第一ターンマークと観戦席との距離が近く、とても迫力がある。
目の前をボートが過ぎると、水しぶきとともに、エンジンオイルとガソリンの匂いがほんのり香る。これぞ生の醍醐味(だいごみ)だ。
指定席で見るのもいいが、外に出て間近で観戦するのもオススメである。


言い忘れていたが、バニラビーンズカップは、若手女性選手とベテラン男性選手が中心に出場しているレースだ。男女の差、年齢の差なく競技が行われる希有なスポーツ、ボートレースならではのイベントではないだろうか。


せっかくだから、このレースに出場する女性選手に話しを聞いてみようと、今回も特別に、ピットへと入れてもらった。
お話を聞くのは、上の写真で筆者の目の前をさっそうと走り抜けた富樫麗加選手だ。


小学校から女子校で、白百合女子大学出身だという富樫選手。そもそも、どうしてボートレーサーになろうと思ったのか聞いたところ「実家がここ(ボートレース多摩川)の近くで、聞こえてくるエンジン音に興味を持ったのがきっかけです」と。
「ずっと女子校だったので、女の子扱いされない職業に憧れがあったんです。エンジン音に誘われて、たまたまボートレースを見て、これだ! って思いました」
ボートレーサーを目指したのは大学1年生。学校を卒業後、ボートレーサー養成所「やまと学校」の試験に合格し、この春レーサーとなった。
「地元なので、学生時代の友達も応援に来てくれます。今日もきっとスタンドにいますよ」
あどけなさの残る笑顔でそう答えた富樫選手。しかし、インタビューを終えてピットに戻ると、驚くほど精悍(せいかん)な顔になった。


なんかいいな、こういうの。
若い人が夢を持って、一生懸命に打ち込んでいる姿。
俺なんか最近は、メシ食うことくらいしか楽しみがないもんな。ああ、はらへったな。
......というわけで記事冒頭に紹介した牛炊である。


牛炊が食えるのは、場内のレストラン「ウェイキー」。
もつ煮込みセット、とんかつ定食など、魅力的なメニューが並ぶが、ここは断然、牛炊がオススメである。
牛炊とは、ご飯の上に牛すじを乗せ、テールスープをぶっかけたもの。


ネットで検索しても、ここボートレース多摩川ばかりがヒットするので、オリジナルの料理なのだろうか。
この牛炊には、キムチがついてくる。
キムチは、そのまま食べてもいいし、途中で牛炊の中にぶっこんでもいい。
そうするとまた違った味わいが楽しめる。

<ちなみにカウンターにはニンニクも用意される。これを入れるとパンチがきいてうまいぞ>

一品で二度、三度とおいしさが広がる牛炊。
これはもう多摩川の奇跡といってもいい料理だ。
ボートレース多摩川では9月5日から10日まで、開設59周年 GIウェイキーカップが開催されている。
牛炊を食べつつレースを楽しむにはもってこいのタイミングだろう。

<じっくり煮込んだモツはアツアツだ>

さて、肝心のレースであるが、なんと筆者は第6レースで二連単3-6を当ててしまった。配当金は2360円で、200円購入していたので4720円の払い戻し!


これでまた、ボートレースの魅力にはまってしまいそうである。
